Summary –  After Nanami’s father runs away due to gambling debts and she is evicted from her apartment, Nanami meets a strange man named Mikage. She saves Mikage from a dog and tells him her story. He gives Nanami his house as a thank you for saving him. When Nanami arrives at Mikage’s home, she is shocked to see that it is not a normal home but a shrine for worship. After that she is greeted by both Onikiri and Kotetsu who are the keepers of the shrine. She then meets Tomoe, Mikage’s familiar, and she learns that Mikage used to be the Earth Deity of the shrine and has bestowed upon her his mark so that she may be the new deity. At first Nanami is reluctant, but as she lives with Tomoe, Onikiri and Kotetsu she begins to understand and works hard in her new position as the Earth Deity. As the story progresses Nanami finds herself falling in love with Tomoe, but he rejects her because the love between a human and a yokai is taboo. My Review/Thoughts –

Set in a supernatural theme, Kamisama hajimemashita was a different kind of Shoujo anime. God, Shrine, protector, ghosts all these supernaturals elements gave the viewers a new flavor. The story mainly covered how Nanami tried to overcome the difficulties she faced as the God of the shrine and how Tomoe & Namai got closer day by day. Nanami had no extraordinary power and on top of that she was clumsy. However Tomoe was always there to protect her. Well to be honest Kamisama kiss had loots of cliché moments, but if you are a Shoujo lover like me, you will probably love it. Plus it had some good comedy. 😀 Tomoe’s shrouded past was one of the interesting parts of the show, and I was always looking forward to know more of him!! (Which made me want to read the manga :3)

The characters were quite likable. As the female protagonist, Namami was kinda cool sometimes. She was clumsy but bold enough to face everything head on. However I would’ve preferred if she was portrayed as stronger & more self dependent. Tomoe was the most interesting character of the show, the typical shoujo hero who acts cold towards the girl but secretly cares for her and tries to protect her at any cost … do you like the sound of it? Cz I sure do. 😛 The build up of the relationship between Tomoe & Nanami was really adorable. Romance being my forte, I enjoyed all those cute & heartwarming scenes between them. :3

Mizuki was a good supporting character. I’d have loved to see more of Mikage & Kurama. Character build up could’ve been a lot better as the show had a set of unique characters. But unfortunately it didn’t live up to the expectations. The characters were lovable, but unfortunately the character development was unsatisfactory.

The art was good I’d say. It was soft, soothing & the characters were beautifully drawn up close. But the animation quality was kind of disappointing. The movements seemed stiff sometimes and some scenes seemed roughly done.

Final thoughts – A worth watching show for Romance/Shoujo lovers, mainstream & cliched, yet sweet and cute at the same time. If you are not into these genre, you probably won’t find it amazing, but the adorable romance and comedy makes it worth the shot. 🙂

  • Positive – Interesting story
    Perfect Romance
    Good Comedy & OST
    Bishounen (for fan-girls :P)
  • Negative – Cliched & Typical
    Unsatisfactory character development
    Plot holes
    Poor animation.

My ratings –

Story – 8/10
Characters – 7.5/10
Enjoyment – 8.5/10
Art & Animation – 7.5
Ost – 8/10

Overall – 7.8/10 🙂
