Hakushaku To Yousei (Earl & Fairy) Review

Name – Hakushaku To Yousei (Earl & Fairy)
Episodes: 12
Status: Complete
Genres: Fantasy, Romance, Shoujo.
Rating: PG-13

Story – The story, set in Victorian Britain, follows the adventures of 17-year-old Lydia Carlton, nicknamed the “Fairy Doctor” due to her interest and understanding of fairies. Her life takes a 180-degree turn when she meets Edgar J.C Ashenbert, the “Legendary Blue Knight Earl” and his crew on a sea voyage to London. Edgar hires her as an adviser during his quest to obtain a treasured sword that was supposed to be handed down to him by his family. *Source Wiki

My Review – I enjoyed this show despite it’s flaws & cliches. The story was interesting in my opinion. Edgar’s tragic past & his never ending desire for revenge, sudden re-appearances of his old enemies and the bitter sweet relationship between Lydia & Edgar; all these things kept the story going. But the story lacked the depth that was expected & needed. Moreover it seemed a little bit rushed sometimes. However these negative sides didn’t stop me from enjoying this show. 😛

Edgar & Lydia 3

The two main characters were the heart & soul of the Anime as the story pretty much revolved around them. Lydia was a gorgeous young woman with a pure soul & self confidence. I absolutely loved how she held her head high &  didn’t give in to the sweet talks from the charming Edgar. (Cz I know pretty well I wouldn’t be able to resist him :P)

Edgar was a very interesting character. He was charming & equally flirtatious, of which Lydia was very much irritated. To be honest the anime was more fun to watch bcz of his attitude towards Lydia. He had a dark & mysterious personality, but deep inside he was a genuinely good person who would do anything for the people he loved and cared for.

Edgar & Lydia 2

Even though it was quite clear that Lydia & Edgar would end up together one way or the other, it was fun to watch them fight over silly matters & care for each other at the same time. Edgar’s undying attempt to win Lydia’s heart was freaking cute 😀 He was very caring towards Lydia & would easily get possessive regarding her. 🙂 I loved their brief bittersweet love story.

E&F

The others characters were simple & plain. Though I liked Raven & Kelpie (Bishounen :P), but it would have been better if they were given more attention & depth to their characters.

The characters were beautifully drawn but the animation didn’t seem that smooth. It was plain & dull, specially at times the characters seemed expressionless. The music was average as well but I personally loved the opening theme. 🙂

Final Thoughts – Recommended for Shoujo lovers only, otherwise you may find the Anime hard to finish. If you’re into Shoujo & romance, you’ll enjoy it. The love story between Edgar & Lydia deserves your time. 😛 I’ll personally recommend everyone to read the Manga/Light novels cz they are genuinely good.

  • Positive – Good story & theme
    – Cute love story between main protagonist
    – Bishonen :3
  • Negative – Cliche & plot holes
    – Incomplete ending (You can read The Manga/Light Novels)
    – Lacks depth & character development
    – Poor Animation quality.

My Ratings –

Story/Plot – 8/10
Characters – 7.5/10
Enjoyment – 8.5/10
OST – 7/10

Overall – 7.5/10
